Are you tired of struggling with getting your child to write a story? Use these writing prompts based on President's Day to get the juices flowing.

Children of all ages need to write and writing prompts can get even the most reluctant author busy. Writing can help a child work on grammar and spelling skills, and will help them work out their thoughts in a creative way. Many kids enjoy writing, so why not try some of the following writing prompts this President’s Day?

Preschool

These writing prompts are perfect for preschoolers who are just now beginning to explore writing. You might consider letting children of this age draw a picture as well.

  • Some people say that President Lincoln wore a tall hat to keep all of his papers inside of it. Why do you think President Lincoln wore a tall hat?
  • The President of the United States has a lot of responsibilities. Think about if you were president. What would you do?
  • The president is in charge of:_______.

Elementary

At this age, children have a better grasp of writing and can explore more difficult writing prompts. Try some of the following.

  • When a president is elected to office, he serves for at least four years. Even then, it is sometimes not enough time to get a lot accomplished. Imagine that you are president, but only for one day. What would you do in that one day?
  • People have many ideas of the type of characteristics that make a good president. In your opinion, a good president should:____________.
  • Write a letter to the president and write about one issue you feel is important. Dear Mr. President:______________.
  • In your opinion, what do you think is the most important part of being president?

Middle School

Middle school students have definite ideas about their beliefs. This is a great time to let them explore their feelings about the presidency and the upcoming election.

  • The presidential election is coming up soon. If you were allowed to choose a candidate for president what, in your opinion, are the most important qualities that someone running for president should have?
  • Think about those running for president. If you were to vote on a president today, who would you vote on and why?
  • Being the President of the United States means a lot of responsibilities. A president must work hard to make the United States a place where everyone wants to live. If you were the president, what would you to do make the United States a better place?
